About a year ago, a work friend told me that I reminded her of a Powerpuff Girl, which was pretty neat, but I think her compliment has just been beaten - yesterday one of my cousins said that with my new rainbow hair I looked like Rainbow Dash!

This is neat for a number of reasons, the main one of course being that she is a PEGASUS! And she can change the weather by moving clouds around! And she has a pet tortoise! 

Unfortunately, the dastardly sun has faded most of the greens and blues in my hair, so now just the pink, purple, red and blonde are showing...

There are odd splodges of blue and green, but they need to be re-dyed ASAP
so that I can go back to my Rainbow Dash-esque status! Woooooo!

this time tomorrow I'll have rainbow hair...

hair dyes purchased in abundance - check.
hair lightened - check.

I'm all ready to go... now I just have to decide how I should do it...

less pastel, more rainbow

A little while ago I decided that as soon as I leave my job I would go back to having pretty coloured hair, and wrote a post about a bunch of pretty pastel hairstyles I had spotted around the interwebs.

As the time to leave has been getting closer and closer, I have been thinking about it more and more and have decided that maybe pastel hair, though super pretty, might be too subtle. I don't want to go mad with the colours or anything, but I would like this to be a reward for leaving my soul-sucking job, and I just don't think pastel will be enough.

So I've found some new options for the hair I want to have from 21st July onwards...

In my final year of university I dyed my hair tropical green. It wasn't all green - the underside was bright green, while the very top layer was my normal colour. I wanted enough colour to make it awesome, without being told off by my work for having ridiculous hair. I also thought that perhaps my graduation photo should probably be sensible, though you can still see a little tinge of green if you look carefully, which is just enough.

Where I currently work I can't imagine any colour of hair out of the ordinary would be acceptable, but since I'll be leaving very soon I've been dreaming of all the pretty things I could do, and as girly as it might be, most of them involve pastel colours...

I am especially loving the rainbows, but since my hair is so dark I doubt they would have the same effect. I might just stick with green - but this time it'll be mint green!

You might remember that I cut 11 inches off my hair in January - and I ended up with something of a quiff...

Well it's taken no time for it to grow back to a reasonably normal length - and now my crazy curls are coming out of hiding, it's awesome!

I'm not quite as cute as Shirley Temple, but my goodness it feels much nicer looking like her rather than like Andrew Ridgeley...!

When I decided to cut off all my hair - OK, not all of it, but 11 inches in length! - I thought it would be kinda like a new start, with a new house and new hair and all that jazz.

What I hadn't bargained for was the odd reaction that my long, thick hair had to being shortened.

And that is: not allowing me to style it in any way without a demi-quiff.

I know, it's not even a full quiff, it's only a partial quiff, an incomplete quiff.

For weeks now I have been perusing the internet for ways to control this half-hairdo and have sunk into the depths of despair upon finding there really is nothing I can do about it until it grows out a bit...

...but then, THEN, I'll be able do this with it:

Until then I'll have to accept that I somewhat resemble Andrew Ridgeley from Wham! and.just.get.over.it.

a very brief history of haircuts

For a few years from about the age of 5, every time I went to have my hair cut I would ask the hairdresser to save my curls. These were dutifully kept and, back at home, carefully placed in an envelope and sent to my bald Grandfather who I figured might appreciate them. In fact, I'm not really sure what I was thinking, but considering I was only 5 I'm going to just assume I was being ludicrously cute.

By the time I was 11 years old I had a long, thick mane of hair, which reached half way down my back. In an act of stupidity/rebellion/pre-teenage angst I had my beautiful hair cut right back, until I looked a bit like Duncan of PJ and Duncan...

It wasn't a good look on Duncan, and even less so on a slightly chubby pre-teenage girl.

Unbeknownst to most, one of my superhero powers is super-speedy hair-growth and since it normally took no time at all to grow, it would have only taken about 3 or 4 years to get it back to the same length again. But the foolish/lazy part of me decided to keep it short for nearly 2 years. I was a huge tomboy for the next few years, and it wasn't until I was about 14 that it started to look anything like "proper girl-length".

Since that one Big Cut I've never done anything drastic with my hair. At university it was tropical green for a year or so, but length-wise it's not changed too much at all. It is currently the longest it has ever been, and I'm getting a bit fed up of it again. I'm planning on having it cut next week, but I'm wondering how short to go... should I be cautious and sensible, or slightly more reckless considering the speed at which it'll grow back if it's a disaster?

One idea I was toying with was having a fringe cut in... but Kaz has told me I'm not to go crying to her when it ends up looking ridiculous* so perhaps I'll give it a miss, and just dream about it instead...
