Tomorrow is my birthday.

I'm not terribly good with birthdays, so I figured I'd pretty much just ignore it this year. I'll probably go out with the boy before heading home with a few friends for an evening of playing games, eating cake and generally being silly.

wishlist: hexagons

If you were to ask me what my favourite shape is I would have no problem in answering you - as long as I was allowed a 3D shape. You see, my favourite shape is the beautiful icosahedron. If you're awesome, you may already have encountered the shape as a d20 (a 20-sided die). It's made up of triangular faces - but don't let that fool you - it's the most perfect shape imaginable and one of the Platonic solids, which is always a good sign.

When it comes to 2D shapes, however, it gets a bit harder since none of them have the perfect beauty of an icosahedron. If I had to choose I guess it would be a hexagon - a regular one, naturally, purely for it's tessellatability. The fact that the hexagon tessellates so beautifully is a slight downfall as it means there can be no hexagon-based Platonic solids. Don't worry though, you can still have a largely hexagon-based solid - but it'll be an Archimedean solid instead of a Platonic one - like my second favourite 3D shape, the truncated icosahedron. It has some pentagons in it too, but we can just ignore them.

Icosahedra aren't the most easy shape to find, so let's go with some hexagonal pretties today:

fabulous shoes for a fabulous lady

In just over 3 weeks one of my favouritest people ever, the beautiful Siobhán, is getting married. I don't think it's possible to convey just how happy and excited I am for her and her beau - they are positively the most perfect couple I have ever known.

The fact that this is the most important wedding of the year has me a little worried about what on earth I should wear - I want their day to be wonderful and perfect, and it would be ace if everyone there was to dressed to impress in full finery. Siobhán has said that she genuinely doesn't mind what people wear, just as long as they're there (and I know she's not just saying it, she really is that sweet!) but I would like to make an extra special effort for an extra special lady.

With that in mind, I have been researching shoes. Rather a lot.

I know one shouldn't necessarily base one's entire outfit around shoes, but I also know how much Siobhán loves and appreciates fabulous shoes, so these will be especially for her!

gnomes, gnomes, gnomes - how do you like it, how do you like it?

I've never been sure if garden gnomes are absolutely incredible or totally creepy. I would like to think that most people enjoy their charms: that little hat, those big boots, that cute chubby-cheeked face (?) but I also completely get why people might think they were freaky.

Despite that, since moving to a flat with some outdoor space at last (woop!), the only things I have really wanted out there are some strawberry plants and a garden gnome. I'm not exactly sure why, but they are the things I feel it is necessary to have. I'm a grown-up now, after all... and grown-ups have garden gnomes, right?

Do you think it would totally defeat the object of having an outdoor space if I were to fill it with terrariums?? Because if not then I could get all kinds of different shaped terrariums and have a different teeny weeny gnome hiding inside each one. Think of the fun!

happy birthday Seymour and Clarissa!

One of the first films I ever remember watching was Frank Oz's Little Shop of Horrors. It was released in 1986, and I can't have been older than about 7 or 8 when I first saw it. Ever since then there has been a little place in my heart for Rick Moranis, who plays Seymour in the film.

When I was a little older I started to prefer TV to film, and my favourite show was, quite obviously, Clarissa Explains It All. Oh, the joy that show brings - the most amazing outfits ever, the most amazing best-friend-with-a-ladder scenes, the best cartoon graphics, the most ridiculous storylines. I just loved everything about it, and with good reason. I don't think I've ever met anyone who didn't like Clarissa.

The thing linking these absolute favourites of mine together is today's date: today is the birthday of Rick Moranis, Seymour in Little Shop and Melissa Joan Hart aka Clarissa Darling. What an awesome day it is too.

full of hot air

I feel very fortunate that I have had the opportunity to travel as much as I have. A few years ago I went on a tour of southern/central Europe, and visited 10 new countries over the course of two months. It was the most amazing adventure, and I can’t begin to explain how much it taught me, and how odd it felt coming back to real life after such an incredible journey.

London is bursting with spring more and more each day, but I still often find myself daydreaming about escaping the city and flying off on another exciting adventure.

With that in mind, I have put together a little wishlist of hot air balloons – can you imagine flying through Europe in a balloon? Heavenly!

It was my friend Laura's birthday a few weeks ago, and her boyfriend Phil bought her the most gorgeous owl brooch from Hairy Growler. The brooch is utterly unique - it's been carved out of the bowl of a spoon! He went for the sleepy looking owl - and I think he made the right choice!

my perfect Valentine's day

It might sound a little sad, but I've never really "done" Valentine's Day, and I can only recall one that has properly stuck in my memory. If I could choose how my Valentine's Day goes, it'd plan it to go something like this...

Wake up after a nice lie-in and snuggle with this little one {1}, to be greeted by {2} or {3} and perhaps have {4} {5} or {6} for breakfast.

After a relaxing bath with {7} and {8} and spritzing myself with {9},

I'd get dressed up like this:

...and then have a lovely refreshing cup of tea using {15} {16} {17}.

Perhaps I would be greeted on my way out the door by the postman with one of these lovelies just for me {18} {19} {20} {21} {22} {23}

...and I would then make my way somewhere special to meet up with someone lovely

{24 is Kaz!} to relax here {25}, drink this {26} and eat some of these {27} {28} {29}.

Since it's a day of treats, I might buy myself something pretty like {30} {31} {32} {33} {34} {35}.

For dinner, {36} or {37} served on {38} with {39} {40} and {41} afterwards, just for good measure.

Phew, it'll be an exhausting day!

60 years ago this week, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was proclaimed Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and her realms. She is currently the second-longest reigning monarch of the UK - she has only 3 years and 215 days to go until she beats Queen Victoria's record, and I bet she's counting down the days!

It's no secret that I've become rather fond of the Royal Family ever since the Royal Wedding last year, and I've found some pretties that I might like to add to my collection...
