friendship bracelets, you rock my wrists

images from the wonderful world of pinterest

In the early nineties, no self-respecting young person would think to leave their house without a wristful of braids and a pocketful of embroidery thread. Wrapping around my lower arms like tiny rainbow snakes, friendship bracelets took over my extremities one inch at a time. I'm pretty sure that it got so extreme that our school banned the wearing of them in the end. I was one of the guiltiest - I had more bands than anyone else at school (I did like to push the boundaries, even then) - but because I was an A grade student, I pretty much got away with it, woo!

I must have been about 10 years old when friendship bracelets really got big, and after being given the book below while on a trip to visit family in New York, I was completely hooked.

From that day on, my mother was constantly complaining about finding thread all over the house and safety pins in the legs of all my jeans.

I have to admit my wrists and I have missed them over the last decade, and I had entertained thoughts of resurrecting the art and surprising my friends with retro braids, but now that's been done for me! I'm super excited they are back in fashion, though it is a pretty hilarious prospect if you really think about it.

I couldn't have put it better myself.

Friendship bracelets, I didn't expect the return of you wonderful creatures, but I'm very glad you're back. Now I just have to remember how to make you... let's start with a simple chevron, shall we? I can't wait!

Hmmm, perhaps I'll include one in your package (if I can remember how to make them!) what are your fave colours?

Aw you're right, I'm absolutely psyched that they're coming back! A simple chevron sounds like a good start to refresh our memories before we get too ambitious with those crazy patterns. Love them bracelets! :D
